JOB SUMMARY 

This position begins in the spring at the start of our Summer 2025 Alaska Sailing Season.   

The USCG Licensed Deckhand & Expedition Guide, known internally as Dexpedition, is responsible for maintenance and cleaning of the interior/exterior of the vessel, and assisting with small boat operations/driving small boats with guests.  In addition, the USCG Licensed Deckhand & Expedition Guide will assist with bridge watch/navigation, perform hourly security patrols including nightly engine room inspections, and assist with docking and anchoring the vessel. This position reports to the Chief Mate but will also take direction from the Expedition Leader. This position assists the Master in communicating and enforcing all company policies and procedures. In addition to reporting to the Chief Mate, the USCG Licensed Deckhand & Expedition Guide also falls under the authority of any Officer of the Watch. The Guide part of this position leads groups of guests on hikes ranging from shore walks to route finding or bushwhacking, skiff tours, snorkeling, and kayaking. This position also take ownership of delivering an unforgettable vacation experience to guests through sharing their knowledge, guiding excursions, and exemplary customer service, with an emphasis on safety.   

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Mechanical aptitude and interest. 

  • Maritime/boating experience preferred 

  • Guiding experience preferred.

  • Strong swimming skills required in Hawaii; lifeguarding/water safety experience preferred 

  • Good customer service skills; professional demeanor, ability to use necessary levels of tact and courtesy. 

  • Detail oriented and thorough; able to follow through on assigned tasks. 

  • Able to work independently using initiative and creativity to complete assigned tasks. 

  • Strong time management skills; able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines. 

  • Work well under pressure. 

  • Ability to get along well with co-workers and support a team environment. 

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

  • Valid Passport  
  • USCG 25T Masters License (Near Coastal)
  • TWIC
  • Medical Fitness Certificate
  • Wilderness First Responder or equivalent required for Summer Alaska season; preferred for Hawaii 
  • CPR / First Aid / AED 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES  

Ship Maintenance: 

  • Wash decks, wash windows, and empty trash receptacles. 

  • Clean exterior areas such as bulkheads, lockers, etc. 

  • Tidy sun deck as needed and keep exercise equipment organized 

  • Prime and paint the vessel as assigned. 

  • Assist the Chief Mate and Chief Engineer as directed. 

  • May be assigned various special projects as per the Mate's work list. 

Boat Operations: 

  • Handle lines during docking and undocking procedures. 

  • Assigned anchoring duties as needed. 

  • Assist the bridge watch officer with lookout and wheel watch. 

  • Assist with raising/lowering swim step and prepping inflatable boats and kayaks for ops. 

  • Drive inflatable boats and may be called on to provide interpretation on skiff tours. 

  • Assist with loading guests and crew in and out of inflatable boats. 

Safety & Security: 

  • Participate in on board safety training, meetings and drills, as directed by the Captain, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding and medical emergencies. 

  • Participate in shore side training as required by the company.   

  • Conduct hourly security patrols including inspection of all lower deck, mechanical, and crew spaces. 

  • Serve as needed on gangway watch. 

  • Familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response Activities. 

Additional Duties:  

  • Lead hiking, snorkeling, and kayaking expeditions in remote wilderness settings, utilizing safety standards and route finding skills. 

  • Load/off-load guest luggage. 

  • Haul ship's trash, laundry, and stores as needed. 

ONBOARD ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

  • Living Conditions- Crew live in close quarters with 4 to 8 people of all genders per room depending on the vessel. Having your own room is not an option due to limited berthing. 

  • Length of Work Shift- Physically able to work 12 hours per day, 7 days a week for 6 to 8 weeks at a time. Rotations off the vessel are usually 2 to 3 weeks. 

  • Mobility- Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, kneeling, crawling, and pushing/pulling.  Must ascend and descend stairs and ladders, sometimes while carrying tools or objects. Able to stand or sit for long periods of time. 

  • Handling/Strength- Able to handle, lift, and lower objects totaling 50 pounds between the ground/deck level to a height of about 4 to 6 feet, and able to repeat these movements.  Able to carry these objects up to 100 feet continuously for 20 minutes. 

  • Environmental Conditions- Able to work in all weather conditions, around loud noise, in small spaces, and fit through a 28-inch wide hatch. 

BASE PAY 

  •  $178/ day + $70 tip guarantee
